Blue Fescue is a compact ornamental grass forming tight mounds of fine-textured, blue-green foliage. It thrives in full sun and prefers moist but well-drained soils. This cool-season grass maintains its distinctive blue color throughout winter, providing year-round interest in the garden.
The grass produces delicate green flower spikes in early to mid-summer that rise slightly above the foliage mound. The tufted growth habit creates an attractive, rounded form approximately 10 inches tall and wide. The blue-green coloration intensifies in cooler weather, making this an excellent choice for seasonal contrast.
Blue Fescue offers excellent resistance to deer browsing and requires minimal maintenance once established. The evergreen foliage provides winter habitat for beneficial insects. While not a native species, it naturalizes well in the Spokane climate and complements native plantings without becoming invasive.
This ornamental grass works beautifully as an edging plant, in rock gardens, or massed as a groundcover. It pairs well with Idaho Fescue, Blue Oat Grass, and perennials like Purple Coneflower and Black-eyed Susan. Use Blue Fescue to create texture and color contrast in borders and as a low-water accent plant.
